 | | | | Sumter Cemetery is a non-profit perpetual care family cemetery. There are two sections in the cemetery, one called the Bronze Section and the other called the Monumental Section. They are named for the type of memorial markers used. The Bronze Section contains only the flat lawn type marker. In the monumental section there are granite and marble markers of various shapes and sizes, some dating back as far as the 1830's. Also in the Monumental Section, some of Sumter's families have provided mausoleums of granite or marble for members of their families. There are also sites within the cemetery that are set aside for special purposes or needs, such as the monument erected to honor both Confederate and Union soldiers that were fatalities of the Battle of Dingle's Mill, on April 8, 1865. The American Legion has adopted a plot for "veterans of foreign wars" who had no family plot in which to be buried. We also have a special section known as "Babyland" for infants of families who do not have a family plot. |
